El sistema inmune de los peces está conformado por dos subsistemas: innato y adaptativo. El sistema inmune innato es el primero en responder a los patógenos y no retiene la memoria de respuestas anteriores. Si el patógeno persiste, se activa el sistema inmune adaptativo que atacará al patógeno con especificidad y memoria. La activación de la respuesta inmune se denomina "inmunoestimulación" o "inmunomodulación", pero se ha comenzado a utilizar el término “inmunidad innata entrenada” para explicar la estimulación de la defensa inmune innata que puede conferir una mayor resistencia inespecífica a la infección por patógenos. El sistema inmune innato considera tres mecanismos de defensa: (1) barreras físicas (Figura 1),
(2) componentes celulares (Figuras 2, 3, 4 y 5) y (3) respuestas humorales (próxima ficha).
